LANDSCAPE DESIGN WITH ROSES: Roses at Plantmark are not just plants; they are key players in creating diverse and beautiful landscape designs:
1. Cottage Gardens: Roses are a classic addition to a rambling cottage garden, effortlessly creating an oasis that exudes warmth, nostalgia, and natural beauty. Underplant roses in borders, creating a tapestry of colour and texture to captivate the senses. Or why not add an Australian flair to your cottage garden design by pairing roses with native varieties, such as Kangaroo Paws and native wildflowers, creating a harmonious blend of elegance and native beauty. Or add an element of romance and old-world charm with climbing roses such as Rosa Albertine [Albertine Climbing Rose], gracefully adorning archways, trellises and pergolas.
2. Formal Gardens: Make a sophisticated statement in your formal garden design with the elegance of Hybrid Tea Roses. These refined beauties offer a structured appearance and can be used to create neat borders and focal points. Match roses with manicured English box hedges [Buxus sempervirens] or Gardenia augusta Florida and straight lines to create a formal, classsic look. Another popular addition to a classic design are standard roses, looking especially fabulous when mass planted along driveways, paths or under windows along a house facade.
3. Contemporary Gardens: Roses are ideal for adding softness to hardscapes and contemporary designs. Try Integrating climbing roses to introduce vertical interest. Their graceful ascent complement the clean lines and minimalist aesthetics of contemporary gardens and buildings. Add a row of standard roses in modern, simple planters. Rosa Iceberg with its beautiful clean, snow white flowers will create a minimalistic, uniform look that suits a contemporary frontyard design.
TIPS FOR PLANTING, MAINTAINING AND GROWING ROSES: Planting and maintaining roses can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, especially when you have the right garden products on hand. At Plantmark, we understand the importance of providing the ideal rose care products to make the job easier, and we stock a range of must-have plant care, pest and disease products for roses.
Below are some of our top tips on how to grow and care for roses in Australia. Read below tips and guidelines for planting, growing, and maintaining roses, to help achieve healthy and vibrant garden landscapes.
Planting Tips:
1. Roses like sunny positions with rich, organic, well-drained soil for optimal growth.
2. Plant roses in spring (Sep-Nov) and autumn (Mar-May) to give time for root development and time for the roses to establish before the summer heat. Another good time to plant roses is in winter using bare root stock, when the plant is dormant and can take a bit more handling.
3. Improve poor soils with Organic Compost and add extra nutrients with an Organic Fertiliser to boost growith and flowering.
4. Dig a planting hole at least 50 cm wide and 50 cm deep, providing ample space for root development.
5. Water thoroughly after planting and consider using a seaweed nutrient solution to promote healthy establishment such as Searles SeaMax Seaweed Organic Fertiliser.
Growing Roses:
1. Water roses regularly, especially during dry seasons, ensuring roses receive several hours of sunlight each day.
2. Use appropriate rose food and fertilisers to encourage robust growth and vibrant blooms. We love Harrys Rose Food and Searles Flourish Flowers & Foliage Plant Food.
3. Prune roses during the recommended periods, usually colder, dormant months, promoting air circulation and new growth.
Rose Care and Maintenance Guidelines:
1. Keep an eye out for common rose pests addressing them promptly to maintain the health of your roses. Watch out for aphids, thrip, mites and whitefly. If present, apply Searles Rose Pro or Searles Bug Beater as directed on pack.
2. Roses are also affected by fungal disease such as black spot and powdery mildew. Use Searles Rose Pro RTU to help control when they first appear.
3. Consider mulching to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate temperature. We love Sugar Cane Mulch at Plantmark.
