Cultural Notes: Punica granatum does best in well drained soil which should be well mulched annually. It enjoys hot, dry summers and is extremely drought hardy, although performs better if watered deeply from time to time. It can be used for hedging, in orchards, as a feature tree, courtyard tree or in a pot. It tolerates light frost but will be severely damaged by prolonged exposure to extreme cold, and fruit quality poor. Similarly a humid climate can have negative impacts on fruit development and make the tree prone to pests and disease. Propagation is usually from cuttings, to be sure trees remain true to type, and should yield fruit after 3years. Little pruning is required, just basic shaping to achieve good balance and adequate space for fruit development. Flowers usually appear in Spring and can last right through Summer, and fruit should mature Autumn/Winter. Fruit develops on mature wood. High temperatures during the fruiting period produce the best tasting fruit. Pomegranates have been cultivated for thousands of years and are highly valued for their health benefits. Highly susceptible to Queensland fruit fly.
