How to Prepare a Water Efficient Garden

STEP 1     >> SOIL PREPARATION

Aerate or turn compacted soils.  Test the pH level of the soil. Most plants prefer a neutral reading between 6 -7pH.
For acidic soils (below 4pH) – add Dolomite Lime and Compost.
For alkaline soils (above 9pH) – add Organic Matter and Iron Sulphate.

STEP 2     >> IMPROVE WATER PENETRATION

Add a Soil Wetter Agent to help with water absorption, particularly if you have sandy soil or pots that are no longer re-wetting.   Either Granular or Liquid Soil Wetting Agents are available.

We suggest

STEP 3    >> CHOOSE SUITABLE PLANTS

Successful planting begins with species selection.  Make sure you read the plant label to make sure the plant is suitable to your planting conditions.  Consider height/width, sun/shade aspect, soil type, frost tolerance and drought tolerance.

STEP 4    >> PLANT SUCCESSFULLY

At planting stage follow our helpful guide ‘How to Plant your Plants Successfully’

STEP 5    >> WATER & FERTILISE

Water the plants in well and 1-2 times per week until established.  Use a combination of Seasol and water.  Apply a suitable slow release fertiliser.

STEP 6     >> MULCH

Apply mulch around the base of the plant to a depth of 75mm and allow it to extend to approx 1m in diameter.

HINT:
Keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid collar rot.
