Ornamental Pears

Ornamental Pears are fast becoming one of Australia’s most popular trees. Their appearance, hardiness and fast growth rate make them a perfect choice in any landscape design.


Ornamental Pears are deciduous trees with glossy green leaves that are highly valued for their spectacular autumn tones, clusters of open, cup-shaped, white flowers in spring and provide shade in the summer months.  Any fruit is usually small and hard.

USES:      
Feature planting, Avenue/Street planting, Screening, Hedging and Pleaching.

PLANTING TIPS:   
These hardy trees are adaptable to most soils including dry and intermittently wet soils.  Mulch to retain soil moisture and control weeds. 

ASPECT: 
Prefers a full sun position but will tolerate partial shade.

PRUNING: 
Formative pruning as required, but not necessary.

WATER REQUIREMENTS: 
Water over warmer months until tree is established.  Once established Ornamental Pears are generally drought hardy.

FEEDING: 
Apply a Slow Release General Purpose Fertiliser in spring and autumn.

 

Manchurian Pear  >> Pyrus ussuriensis

A broad, medium sized tree that flowers very early in spring. Has bright autumn leaf colour.

Dense, rounded and spreading. Glossy, dark green rounded leaves. Reds, Purples, Oranges, Yellows. Clusters of small white flowers in early spring and pale pink in bud. One of the first ornamental pears to flower in spring.
 

Bradford Pear  >> Pyrus calleryana 'Bradford'

A medium sized tree with a pyramid shape. A very hardy species.

Pyramid, becoming broader with age. Thick and glossy, dark green, heart-shaped leaves. Reds, Oranges, Purples, Yellows. Clusters of small white flowers in early spring.
 

Capital Pear  >> Pyrus calleryana 'Capital'

A narrow, upright form and an excellent choice for space-restricted or compact areas. A very hardy species.

Narrow, compact, column shape. Glossy, dark green leaves. Reds, Oranges, Purples. Plentiful white flowers produced in large corymbs during spring.

An attractive, medium sized tree with superior branch structure and excellent flower display.

An upright, medium sized tree.
